Did You Know… that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and asthma in children are not a good mix. This is something to be aware of for your children or grandchildren with asthma.
Reflux is common in children and adults with asthma and therefore PPIs are commonly prescribed along with asthma medications. This has led manufacturers to promote PPIs for asthma.
From the Journal of the American Medical Association: Researchers for the American Lung Association mounted a study that tested a popular PPI drug on more than 300 kids with asthma.
The results: The PPI did nothing to reduce asthma symptoms or improve lung function, but the kids did have increased risk of adverse events that included respiratory infection, sore throats and bronchitis.
PPIs have been shown to deplete magnesium because they interfere with mineral absorption.
What is the significance? Magnesium deficiency has been linked to one of the causes of asthma.
In fact magnesium treatments are sometimes used by naturopathic doctors to help control asthma.
There can be other underlying causes of asthma, such as fungal infection and food sensitivities. If you or anyone in your family is dealing with this chronic issue, I would be happy to work with you (whether you are local to my practice or out of town).
Do share these important findings with everyone you know. It’s a blessing to be able to help one another.
Until next time…stay healthy, think peace, be love and see love in everyone!
